Yeah as a white-in-passing person or w/e (I'm sorry I don't know the term for someone who's physically pale but from a poc background the point is i'm basically white) but with religious roots relating to the term spirit animal I also find it kinda marginalizing and grating to hear people say "spirit animal" in joking/passing

it just relates to my culture and some people as i told think its a joke it is really not
yeah i think that what it comes down to is whether or not use of that term contributes to the trivialization and marginalization of oppressed cultures, and it does when it’s used in a less-than-serious context.
would the term "spirit animal" still be considered appropriative if you were white but it was part of your religion?
as a white person whose religion does not feature such things i don’t feel it’s within my right to give an answer to that.
i don’t think it should be used as a joke, anyways. if you’re saying a character is that to you, you’re not using it in a serious cultural context???
plus no matter what your culture is you can’t deny that the primary connection is to native american culture and that term is used to trivialize its significance. as a white person in a western society chances are you are not oppressed for your culture the way native american people are.
